@Mike Cash
The ship was docked close to the security gate, usually they are further up the dock.
I went to the bay area recently and the homeless people who live under the expressway have moved out and access to the most of the area is restricted and fenced off now.
Here is a photograph on TwitPic of a sunset and <a href="http://twitpic.com/fbkly" rel="nofollow">navy ship "US Aegis Destroyer Pinckney"</a> photographed through same the fence.

I saw this ship today from the Yokohama Bay Bridge and it killed me that I wasn't able to get a photo of her. She looks like a much larger car carrier got her aft 1/3 chopped off in an accident and the owners just decided to leave her short and put her back in service.

Sort of the AMC Gremlin effect visually, if you know what I mean.

I have added a link to a screen shot from Google Earth/Ocean, under the main photograph.

@ Framed and Shot: I think oil and molten lead would be a pretty good guess. I've seen people catching small fish and squid from the docks, and in summer, kids play in the rock pools and catch octopus. Maybe Google should upgrade the bay to a "Tough Fish Only Zone"

@Steve: We are probably neighbours. The Beetle was docked not too far from where the photo of the Asian Jupiter was taken. It looks a lot better when it gets going.

A very striking image. It is very dark and mysterious, but it suits the subject well. The water looks like oil or molten lead. Great atmosphere.
