Urban Art in Japan: No Dog Poop
“We want more than a mere photograph of nature. We do not want to paint pretty pictures to be hung on drawing-room walls. We want to create, or at least lay the foundations of, an art that gives something to humanity. An art that arrests and engages. An art created of one’s innermost heart.” (Edvard Munch)

New Year’s Day, 2009 Japan
Most of the mountains are covered in thick bamboo forests like the one behind the house in this photograph. We hiked up a service track following a single, barely overhead power line until we came to a clearing near the top, watched the snow storms roll in and enjoyed the silence.

Tech Notes:
What a challenge. I try to keep post processing to a minimum. Mainly color correction and then levels.
In nearly all my pictures taken with the S70, the highlights often have magenta and purplish casts, and are noticeable in back lit scenes, especially around tree branches.
Depending on the weather, season, and pollution level, the image will have an overall yellowish cast, and the road surface a green cast.
Usually I can reduce, or completely dial out the problem but throw in a few taxis, a yellow / green jacket, and a calibration target for a t shirt it’s no wonder I love black and white photography.

Release The Hounds

Riding my bicycle in the city, and noticed the wolves and the reflections in the glass. Didn’t look twice at the posters until I downloaded the photographs. This type of advertising is pretty much part of the landscape in some downtown areas.
I have quickly learned that if I write anything in detail about the posters in the clinic’s window, somewhere, the order will be given, “release the spam bots.” The graphic, on the middle right window pane will give you a fair idea though.
