Hi Fish Whisperer. I like highlight recovery, but my camera is famous for its purple fringing and it looks like the outlines were traced with a lead pencil if I post process beyond the limits of good taste.
Most of the work is done in camera, exposing for details in the highlights, usually the skin tones or the main point of interest and looking at how and where the shadows step down to black.
A good starting point for me was finding a great tutorial for a black and white photoshop action by Greg Gorman. You can download a ready to go version if you search on google, though making a few of own versions and deconstructing the pre-made gave me a clearer idea of what to do when I process images that lack strong directional lighting.

Fantastic as always. That sky looks so full of foreboding, it’s almost scary.
Absolutely cool snapshot. I like the composition and – as always – your b/w toning.
Outstanding composition, like the dramatic sky and great details in the ship. The little girl is so adorable, adds a nice touch to this image.
I love your B/W images. Your tonal range is great and the composition is perfect. Do you do a lot of post production on these?
Cheers
Thanks for the comments.
